“I chose music because it is my truth”
Priya is an intuitive vocalist and musician, drawing from a diverse background of influence and experiences. Both self-taught and formally trained, she is a singer-songwriter who jumps in and around musical genres quick like a jackrabbit. She sings, plays the guitar, a variety of small percussion instruments, uses a loop machine, and is currently developing her skills on the piano and accordion.
When she was 2 years old her favourite songs to sing were ‘Will you be there’ by Michael Jackson (from the movie Free Willy) and ‘Jumma Chumma Dede’ (from the Bollywood movie Hum). She began singing in a choir at the age of 6 and continued all the way to university. In high school she joined a vocal jazz group, and that is where her appreciation and love for jazz began to grow.
In 2013, she graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Music degree with Honours in Performance (Voice), a minor in Psychology, and a minor in Women and Gender Studies. When she started university, like most people, she was unsure of what she wanted to pursue specifically, so tried a little bit of everything, including: musical theatre, jazz, folk, hip-hop, Indian Classical, and free improvisation.
She has worked extensively with children and youth in Calgary and Ottawa, as well as abroad in Guatemala and India. She also works with youth and adults with special needs in various contexts, and assists a music therapist at the Perley Rideau and Veterans Health Centre. She hopes to pursue a Masters in Music Therapy.
A believer of expression through movement as well as sound, Priya has former training in many different styles of dance, including ballet, contemporary, flamenco, hip-hop, house, and breakdancing. She is also a certified Hatha Yoga Instructor, and teaches in downtown Ottawa.
Priya continues to pursue a career in music through teaching, voice acting, music therapy, and performances. She loves writing her own songs and arrangements, and is currently working on an album to be released in spring 2016! Stay tuned for details about upcoming shows.
