5 Reasons why Performing in Your Community is Key to a Singers Success
Article by Chantal Hackett & Stephanie Shaw, Vocal Coaches at Sing House Studios
Our team at Sing House Studios gets asked this question all the time: “Okay, you’ve taught me to sing, now how do I get fans and start selling my music”?
The answer is always the same – get out there! Share your music. Record labels will only take interest in your talent if you are talented, have original songs and have a unique look and sound. Most importantly, they pay attention to how many fans you have and they can see this based on your Facebook Fanpages “likes” and your Youtube subscriptions and comments. Venues will ultimately only hire you if you can bring them something – and people along with you who enjoy your music and who have become fans of your art. You don’t have to drop everything, your friends, family and wonderful city to gain success! The answer lies in your community first and foremost. If you’re like us, you belong to many communities; your music studio, your school, your church, your gym, your sports team…the list goes on!
Why community is KEY to helping you gain connections and expose you as an artist:
- Community creates opportunity. A community will host local talent shows and open mic nights and will give you many opportunities to get comfortable performing and gain exposure.
- Community builds confidence. The more performance opportunities you get, the more confident you will become on stage. Try singing the National Anthem at local sports team’s games, enter the talent shows at your school, volunteer at your music studio and meet new people to collaborate – this is your passion after all!
- Community leads to networking. You never know who will be in a given crowd! You may meet other musicians looking to collaborate or get offered other performance opportunities. The more people you meet the more possibilities arise.
- Community encourages your drive and passion. As a musician who is working on mastering your craft need these performance opportunities to keep motivated. In between endless hours of practicing you need shows to keep your passion and drive alive and give you something to work towards.
- Community supports. A community who hosts local shows lets local talent know that you are supported, which will add to your confidence as a performer which will transcend when you do start touring.
