6 Steps to Being Newsworthy
Blog by SHS Coach, Jessica Pearson
As a local musician, it is hard to get your show or event into the media. Getting the advertisement from the media really helps bring people out and gets you noticed. Here are some tips I use when working with the media.
- Have an important event to talk about
The media wants to know about the significant shows and charity events you are performing at. Make your show important to the local community. - Have a clear message
Have a headliner that grabs the attention of the audience and makes your shows valuable to the media. - Know who to talk to
You need to research whom to talk to in media about your event. Who in the paper, blog, or website to talk to in order to get your show on their media site. - Location and audience
Make sure the blog you are contacting has an audience that would want to come to your show/event and that they are located in the area your show is located in. - Build your list
Talk to journalist and see who is interested in your news and events. Build your list of contacts up and always keep in touch. Be personal! - Be ready
Have everything ready when you go to the media. You want your press release, bio, photos, press kit and information on your event all ready before you contact anyone. Be confident and be professional.
Always be yourself and know what you want to promote to the media.
