During my studies, one of my favourite topics we learned is branding. I love talking about it because it’s the foundation of Marketing. Each brand is known for something. For example, Apple is known for innovation because they launched products that changed the technology industry. There are also companies that have a negative or controversial reputation. I believe McDonalds will always have a controversial feel to their name because like we all know they don’t serve the healthiest foods. Supersize me really changed the game for them unfortunately. That being said, each brand has a reputation and is known for something.
This also applies to artists. Look at Michael Jackson, he is known for his raw talent which really changed the music industry. All those examples are what we call branding. If you Google branding it’ll tell you that branding is what differentiates a brand over another brand, it’s what makes you stand out in the crowd.
As a singer, you have to figure out what you want to be known for. Do you want to be known for your amazing range, for your style, for your staging presence? Whatever it is, your brand has be the base of your career.
Like you see, branding is very important in business and since the music industry is a business, singers are considered products. You need to figure out what your brand is and make sure it is shown in every show do and song you write.
