If so, I have a question for you! Are you depending on others (like record labels) for your success? If your answer is yes, that’s okay. However, make sure you read the rest of this blog.
You may have noticed that the industry is currently shifting into a digital world. The rise of Spotify and Apple Music are proof that this industry is very different than 10-20 years ago. The music industry we grew up with, that made us think record labels are the only way to succeed, isn’t the industry of nowadays. Nowadays artists have to manage and promote themselves in order to start their career. Of course labels are still around but even they had to shift and act upon this gigantic industry change.
You might be thinking, well I’m a singer, not a marketer or business professional… I’ll pay people to do that for me. That’s a valid statement and yes you can pay people for that but in order to adjust to this industry change you have to learn the basics of marketing and promotion. Don’t forget that even if you get signed with a label they will definitely want a part of what you’ll be making. So why not start your own career yourself?
I’m sure you’ve heard before that singers can’t make their passion a living and that it shouldn’t be considered a career. I disagree! If you want it bad enough and put in the work you can have a chance at a career. Learning how to manage yourself will be very beneficial to your exposure. Also, it could be exciting for you – a new challenge! I know, this sounds really scary but with some research and guidance you will be on your way! Read a blog, read a book, interview industry professionals. Learn and try techniques you’ve learned and I’m sure, with once step at a time, you will see your audience grow!
First thing you should be doing is start working on your social media platforms. Follow people, interact with them, message them, get the word out. People love to follow someone who has great content and who interacts with them… Use this to your advantage! Also, compare your content to other singers for inspiration. A good following means good exposure.
Get in touch with your local venues, bars, radio stations and try to get them to let you play your music. Always have a couple songs ready to sing on the spot for last minute auditions. Also, always carry your phone/laptop, wherever you go so that you have a couple songs to show people.
Last thing is have confidence in yourself! This industry is not the nicest industry and is also very hard to get into! Show people what you are made of and why they should help you along the way. Only you can do this and you alone.
